Matthew 8:18-22 - Would-Be Followers

¹⁸ Now [when] Jesus saw many crowds around him, he gave orders to depart to the other side. ¹⁹ And a scribe approached [and] said to him, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go!"

²⁰ And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have dens and birds of the sky [have] nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."

²¹ And another of the disciples said to him, "Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father."

²² But Jesus said to him, "Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead!"

⁵⁷ And [as] they were traveling on the road, someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go!"

⁵⁸ And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have dens and birds of the sky [have] nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay [his] head." ⁵⁹ And he said to another, "Follow me!" But he said, "Lord, first allow me to go [and] bury my father."

⁶⁰ But he said to him, "Leave the dead to bury their own dead! But you go [and] proclaim the kingdom of God."

⁶¹ And another [person] also said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first allow me to say farewell to those in my house."

⁶² But Jesus said, "No one who puts [his] hand on the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God!"
